David Hunt Paradigm Reinstatements

David Hunt, Co-owner/Director

Our Goals

We have set up this company with a simple ethos:

  • Reduce Insurance Indemnity Spend.
  • Reduce Loss Leakage through expert surveying and estimating.
  • Apply common sense and technology to make sensible decisions leading to best option recommendations.

We have all seen too many examples of inappropriate decisions based around poor information, poor communication and dubious conflicts of interest in the building reinstatement trade. This results in massively increased unnecessary spend by insurers, complaints and distressed property owners.

What We Do

Paradigm manage the reinstatement job from start to finish staying committed an focused until the problem is identified and fixed. We only use qualified and experienced tradespeople who completely buy into our company ethos. We invest in and deploy state of the art technology where needed, such as Infrared cameras, Boroscope cameras, Tracer gas, Gravimetric testing and suchlike. As important, our highly trained technicians understand both the equipment and the readings they give. They understand moisture damage in buildings and the effects this has on different building materials. For example, if a moisture meter tells us there is an indicated level of moisture present on a wall, this doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem to be concerned about. Moisture is always present to some degree in any building. However if the decorative finishes are not affected and there are no other indicators of any moisture related problem, our expert opinion will give you peace of mind that there is nothing to be concerned about.

What We Don’t Do

  • Carry out unnecessary strip outs or recommend expensive remedial solutions where a simpler and equally effective solution is available.
  • We don’t give up on any insurance claim. We see it through to conclusion for the property owner.
  • We don’t stop communicating with our clients and ensure that all parties are on the same page throughout the project - from start to finish.

About Paradigm Reinstatements

Restoring Sense in the Building Reinstatement Marketplace

Previously there was very little genuine trust between the insurance companies, the building firms and the property owners. Insurance loss adjusters are wary of building firms overestimating a repair. Property owners are worried that their property will not be reinstated back to a perfect condition and building firms more often than not lack the expert knowledge and specialist skills needed to deal with flood or fire damaged buildings. Paradigm Reinstatements derives its name from the phrase: ‘Paradigm Shift’.

What is a Paradigm Shift?

A paradigm shift is used to describe a fundamental change in the way things are done.

Examples of Paradigm Shifts in History:

  • The change from propeller passenger aircraft to jet propulsion on the invention of the jet engine.
  • The switch from typewriters to word processors on the invention of the microchip
  • The use of PCs and accounting software rather than manual bookkeeping
  • The use of email, texting and messaging, instead of writing letters and posting them
  • The use of cars instead of horses on the invention of the internal combustion engine

These examples all illustrate a Paradigm Shift that came about by visionary business leaders that brought immediate and considerable benefits to their customers. This meant that the new way of doing things, brought about by the ‘Paradigm Shift’ solution they introduced quickly became established as the new standard way of doing things.

Paradigm Reinstatements was founded on the basic principles of trust. In this specialist sector, trust is paramount for a successful outcome. Trust between the property owners, insurance companies and Paradigm Reinstatements, with the Paradigm team holding that trust intact throughout the process. Our company was formed by David Hunt, a former police officer and Colin Macdonald, a former insurance loss adjuster both recognising the need for a fundamental Paradigm Shift in the building reinstatement industry, to create a new standard based on trust and expert knowledge of the building reinstatement sector.

Examples of Our Work

Over recent years we have had numerous examples where Paradigm’s expert consultative approach has resulted in savings of tens of thousands of pounds. One notable example was in a modern Glasgow tower block where our knowledge and understanding of moisture damage and building materials saved the insurance company over £100,000 in building reinstatement costs. Prior to our involvement, a simple escape of water from a shower mains feed, eight floors up, had caused water damage to four flats below. The previously appointed contractor had estimated for major strip outs of all five properties; the flooded flat and the four below. They recommended removing all internal partitioning, flooring and ceilings, effectively turning these five flats into a massive construction site, eight floors up. We applied our expert knowledge and reduced the recommended reinstatement spend to less than £25,000. We were able to test the site thoroughly and we concluded that a concrete structure of this size was easily able to withstand and absorb hundreds of gallons of water and not cause hidden structural problems in the future, never mind the water leaking from a shower pipe. We proved this by carrying out a fully comprehensive moisture survey with specialist gravimetric testing equipment. This is an example of our ‘Paradigm Shift’ in this sector. Only by expertly testing and evaluating a flood or fire damaged property, are you able to accurately estimate the optimum repair costs.
